No Lookin Back

NO LOOKIN BACK
When I hear that lonesome whistle, get a feelin' in my bones
When I feel those rollin' wheels, I start to feelin' like I'm gone
When I see that smoke a risin' way above those steady tracks
I know it's come the time, no lookin' back
You can't stop the river though the bank it might be soft
You can't stop the wind although the rock it's mighty tough
No you can't stop that fish from swimin' back upstream alone
No you can't stop the traveler travelin' on.
Well I'm at that bustlin' bus station, a ticket in my hand
I get the feelin' that I'll never see your face again
Well I see those doors swing open and the driver takes my pack
I know it's come the time, no lookin' back
You can't stop your friends from dyin' though you love with all your heart
Can't stop the press from lyin' though you try to do your part
You can't stop the paint from dryin' though the work is not complete
No you cannot keep the traveler off his feet.
When I'm sittin' at the airport thinkin' that I'll turn around
Wishin that I'd never though to take my feet up off the ground
I hear that final boarding call and when it comes to that
I know it's come the time, no lookin' back
Can't stop but finding reason in the most disordered deeds
Can't help but find a pattern in the chaos of the street
Can't help but feelin' down, although the day it might be bright
No you cannot stop the traveler in her flight.
When I'm walkin' with a friend arm in arm on down the street
And we come up to that corner where our paths no longer meet
I wish we'd stand forever just exactly where we're at
Then I know it's come the time, no lookin' back
Can't stop the snow from melting, turnin' winter into spring
can't stop your heart from beating when a new love takes its wing
can't stop the sun from risin' though the night is oh so black
and you cannot stop the traveler comin' back.

West Texas Bound

WEST TEXAS BOUND
I'm dead broke, I'm busted flat
I got a one way ticket and I won't be back
'cause I ain't got a dollar
not a nickel to my name
well there's a whisper on the wind today
that sweet farewell gonna blow me away
'cause I'm gone, West Texas bound
If you saw me round in Austin
yeah I've been there for a few
but those city lights don't light up
'less you pay that 'lectric bill
so I'm headed out on 90 West
to that dark, dark desert that I like the best
'cause I'm gone, West Texas bound
Well there ain't no tax collector gonna find me here
Not out among the cactuses, the snakes and steers
There ain't a mailman in the world that's gonna climb this hill
just to deliver me a handful of credit card bills
the stars out here will be my only guide
oh but you see so many stars you would'a thought you died
and when I do just roll my body in the Rio Grande
and I'll float East again to be an honest man
Once I had a bed to sleep on, soft as there could be
and a sweet little lady who would come and go
but she just wouldn't let me be
so I'm takin off, I had enough of that
I'm gonna find me a rock for to rest my head
I'm gone, West Texas bound
Well I hear that sweet train whistle for to sing me off to sleep
and I don't need a nickel for to drink my fill
outta that river fast and free
well I'll live out here under the big ol' sky
but I won't get lonely 'till the day I die
I'm gone, West Texas bound.

Long Time Gone
03:09
|
|

LONG TIME GONE
I walked down the river till the river's end,
and I got to the ocean where the waves begin,
and I turned around, walked right back down that river again.
I walked up the mountain till I reached the sky,
then I walked right back down the other side,
then I turned around looked up just how high I'd been.
And it's a long time gone,
all that much sweeter when I come back home,
and you'll be waitin' maybe you'll be gone,
and I'll be leavin' too.
Well the sun went down night got so dark,
I looked up saw those stars how far away they are,
how close I am to you.
Well the mornin' come the suns arisin,
think of you 'cross that horizon,
seems so far away it makes me blue.
CHORUS
Well I get so lonely nearly go insane,
just to see another person that I know their name,
well I'd give nearly anything I got to give.
And some nights the ground just feels so hard,
the road ahead's one long mirage,
I don't know why I would choose this way to live.
CHORUS
Then the breeze is blowin' sweet and cool,
and that dusty road it don't seem to cruel,
and everything is glowin' in the sun.
And I don't know why I'd ever care to go back home,
I don't know where I'd rather be,
until my days are done.

On Frenchmen Street

ON FRENCHMEN STREET
I'm headed down that Mississippi river
yes I'm bound for that ol' town of New Orleans
I've got some folks to see there
sure to get me feelin' right again
we'll head on down to Frenchmen street
the music there'll get my toes a tappin'
be sure to get my head on straight
be sure to get my fingers clappin'
Don't bring me down, don't bring me down,
oh mama don't ya, please don't bring me down.
Don't bring me down, don't bring me down,
oh mama don't ya, please don't bring me down.
The sweet trombone it toots along,
slidin' up and down that melody
the drummer keeps the rhythm tight,
snare drum shootin' off at every beat
they're dancin' down on Frenchman street
they hold each other close and swing and sway
the singer's clappin' 'long with me
and come the chorus you will hear 'em say
CHORUS
That washboard clicks and clacks in time
that booming bass it thunders on its way
the saxophone its so divine
oh and when those saints come in you'll hear 'em say
we'll dance all night on Frenchmen street
oh in that number I would want to be
cause when the band comes marchin' in
I'll tell you, oh I'll tell you, can't be beat.

Gotta Be On My Way
03:59
|
|
||
GOTTA BE ON MY WAY
Well I ramble cross the country
from the wild pacific shore
to the blue atlantic ocean
down the gulf of mexico
and wherever do I ramble
oh I sing the same old tune
for whoever's there a listenin
they will know it's ringin true.
Well so long, been good to know you
I'm down the road, but thinkin of you
you can ride along, but don't think that I will wait
well I wish that I could stay
but I gotta be on my way
just a travlin' kid, no ride, no rail, no path that I won't take.
I was born in San Francisco
in that city by the bay
I stayed there for a little while
as long as I could take
I'd ramble up to Market street
that weary red brick march
though a rambler never stop his ramblin
somewhere he must start
well I traveled south down highway one
to the town of santa cruz
I rambled from the Boardwalk
to the hills of Bonnie Doon
and many a fair friend did I meet
somewhere along the way
I'd ramble with them's 'long I could
but then they'd hear me say
I got to New York City
and I thought I'd made it big
but pretty soon I realized
just how small that city is
the city life is fun
and though it may be it for some
my legs they start a walkin
and you'll hear me sing this song.
So I went down to New Orleans
for to stay a little while
I'd sit and watch those barges
float past Mississippi style
I'd ramble from the quarter
to that big ol' Pontchartrain
but that river keeps on movin
and I gladly do the same
well I'm sittin' in Seattle
trying to write this rambling song
so if you hear me singin
by new you should know the words
just sing a word
a line, a verse
and make your voice be heard.

You Can Call Me Anything
03:03
|
|
||
YOU CAN CALL ME ANYTHING
I was up at your place
payin you a visit
but you just wouldn't say one nice thing
now would you
call me liar
call me cheater
call me dog
you call me no good fool
so I just went back home but now
oh I'm a missin' you
I can't walk it's too far
I can't drive I'm outta gas
I can't take an aeroplane
I'm too broke for that
so I'm just sittin' by the telephone
waitin' for to hear that ring
if you just call me up baby
you can call me anything
Well I walk around the block
stop and see the view
I get back and check
there's no message from you
I miss you so hard girl
I cry myself to sleep at night
Oh well I shoulda known better
but you shoulda known I wouldn't, alright?
CHORUS
SOLO
You called me so many names
you shoulda wrote a book
won't you call me up and tell me
just to come back home
you can curse me and insult me
you can taunt me
you can scream and yell
if you just call me up sugar
you sure can call me anything you will.

Santa Fe

SANTA FE
Take me on, on down the road
set me up in a big ol' house
in Santa Fe, New Mexico
I'll be sittin' pretty
I'll be feelin' giddy
Albuquerque you ain't gonna make a fool outta me
I'll be up there every day
maybe waste my life away
but it's Santa Fe
that's gonna make a fool of me
Oh well he used to be so good to me,
used to be so sweet
used to be so charming
well he swept me off my feet
but one day while out walking
oh so much to my alarm
I saw Albuquerque and Las Cruces
walkin' arm in arm
so I'll be up there every day
maybe waste my life awawy
but it's Santa Fe
that's gonna make a fool of me.
When I was just a young girl
well I liked to play the fool
I'd smile coy and tell 'em
just to tell me what to do
but I been fooled around and played with
just one, two, three many times,
so if you're lookin' for a fool
I'd pick another fool to try
cause I'll be up there every day
maybe waste my life away
but it's santa fe
that's gonna make a fool of me.
Take me on, on down the road
set me up in a big ol' house
in Santa Fe, New Mexico
I'll be sittin' pretty
I'll be feelin' giddy
Albuquerque you ain't gonna make a fool outta me
I'll be up there every day
maybe waste my life away
but it's Santa Fe
that's gonna make a fool of me

Sometimes

SOMETIMES
I got a baby down in Brighton Beach,
and I know it that she loves me but she's out of reach,
and I make it down to see her every Sunday morn,
but I miss her every Monday when her lovin's gone,
yeah I miss her every Monday when her lovin's gone.
Get up every mornin' and I work so hard,
and I wish that I could fly away and not return,
but I know that if I'm idle I would not be free,
I'm just a slavin' to the idleness that's hauntin' me,
just a slavin' to the idleness that's hauntin' me.
Sometimes the city's just a mean ol' scene,
and it makes me wanna go and live beneath the trees,
but I know that I would miss the busy bustlin' crowds,
and I know I'd miss the subway screamin' underground,
oh I know I'd miss the subway screamin' underground.
Sometimes I sit down by the rivers' edge,
and I watch the boats they're rollin' past beneath the bridge,
and I wonder where I'm headed but I never know,
and I wonder why I'm stayin' when I could just go,
oh I wonder why I'm stayin' when I could just go.
Sometimes I'm walkin' neath those towerin' walls,
and I wonder why the reason that I feel so small,
and then I think about the clouds way up above those roofs,
and I know that bein' small's no reason to be blue,
oh I know that bein' small's no reason to be blue.

BIRD SONG
Can't you hear that rooster crowin'?
Singin' sunrise songs?
But I'll just stay here in bed with you
Cause we've been here all night long
The nightingale will have his rest
The early birds will take their test
But we'll be here the whole day through
Just you and me, just me and you.
I'll be your pink flamingo, if you be my chicadee
I'll be your soaring eagle if you build a nest with me
I'll be your snowy owl and we'll hoot the night away
If you be my homing pigeon and together we will stay.
Can you hear the turkeys cacklin'
as they rustle up those worms?
Us, we've got our job to do
To fill this bed and keep it warm.
The peacocks are out on parade
the ducklings waddle on their way,
But we'll be here the whole day through,
Just you and me, just me and you.
CHORUS
So let the dove wheeze out in song
and the crows all caw and cry
Let the cuckoo tick and tock the hours
as we watch them fly right by
The lark will rise, then take a nap
The geese will have their evening snack
but we'll be here the whole day through
just you and me, just me and you.

CANDY MAN
One day I went to see my baby
and I couldn't find her there
I said "oh no my lovin' darlin's
gone and disappeared"
and just as I's about to hang my
head so low and cry
she jumped out from behind that door
and shouted out surprise!
I'll be your candy man
and you know that I'll be true
I'll be your candy man
ain't nothin that sweeter than you
I'll be your candy man
and they know it miles around
she said, baby if you be my candy man
I'll be your salty dog.
Oh when I met my sweetheart
she was with another man
he was sharp and handsome
I was just a bum back then
well I took my shiny nickel
and I went to the candy shop
now she's with me and he's the bum
this candy man's on top
CHORUS
One day I came upon my sugar
she was feelin' oh so down
said, "oh my gal what could have happened
to give you such a frown?"
she said, "my mean ol' daddy
has kicked me outta his home"
I said, "girl don't worry cause I'll
build a house for you outta honey comb."
CHORUS
My girl she is so pretty
she's fine as I ever saw
her eyes they glow like gummy bears
her smile wide as a chocolate bar
her hips they make me shake just like a
mouth fulla cinnamon gum
my candy girl she can't be beat
ain't nothin' like her under the sun.
